4Great bike for tweens or smaller adults
By Cypherpunk
Based on another review, I bought the 24" model for our son, for his eleventh birthday. I've had a mid-range mountain bike for years, and I took my son on several longer trails, last year, and it was hard work for him to make it on his dirt bike. He has been committed to trail riding, and he still loves to go, even though it was a real workout on his old bike, so I promised him we'd get him a good trail bike, this spring.I'm not a total bike snob, but I want to see a certain level of quality, if I'm going to pay $400+ at a local shop, and I just wasn't seeing it. On the other hand, my eleven year old is 5'3" and growing like a weed. I'm 6'5", and his mom's 5'11", so really, it was a tough sell to spend enough for a nice bike, when he may only get a year or two of use before he needs a substantially bigger bike! For those making comparisons between standard high-end bikes and this one, the sizing is WAY off. I'm a really tall guy, and I look down at most people, when they're standing beside me (while I'm on the bike), and I have a 24" frame (the length of the upright tube, from the center of the crank to the top of the frame crossbar), which I had to special order. Most bikes I've looked at over the last few years, I would order the same size in a Specialized, Cannondale, Giant, and Trek. If you go looking for the standard equivalent to the Piranha 24" size at a local shop, you're probably going to be looking at a 16" frame, which is generally a small frame size. With that in mind, their 26" frame is probably equivalent to an 18", which would be a medium frame size. For reference, my son has a 30" inseam, and with the seat raised to the appropriate height for his legs, the handlebar height and distance from his body are almost perfect. The bike uses twist grip shifters and decent quality gears, but it's definitely not high-end Shimano setup. Once he understood that he had to twist past the gear he wanted and hold it for a second or two, until the chain seated on the correct gear ring, then release, he was shifting smoothly and quickly. It's still a bit tricky, but he got used to it very quickly. As for assembly, I'm not much use, in terms of rating difficulty. I usually carry a multi tool and spare tube, and I can do moderate repairs in a few minutes, on the trail. I did have my son help, because the case was pretty banged up (as others have noted), and it was torn halfway open. The bike has plastic pedals and a plastic-coated crank. The only damage I noticed was a cracked pedal and partially torn plastic peeling off the crank. The wheels were in good shape and were true (even though they handlebar stem and the crank go through them, when packed). I showed my son all the parts, and he watched as I assembled it. I took my time, and we put it together in about 20 minutes, with a few more adjustments, once we got it out to the driveway. One trick that may help folks out is that the ends of the brake cables (which run inside the plastic brake cable sheaths--the plastic outer cover) are a fixed length, with drum-shaped heads on each end. The curved metal tube near the bottom end is called a noodle, and it keeps the brake cable from kinking or fraying. There's a rubber cover that keeps dirt and water out of the lower section of the brake cable sheath. For those having trouble getting the wheel and tire on, you should gently pull the black rubber cover back and pop the head out of the caliper frame. The calipers work vaguely like scissors, pulling on the furthest part of the caliper arms to squeeze the brake pads against the sides of the bike's wheel rim. The cable attaches to the caliper frame at the end. There is a small U-shaped notch that holds the cable head. If you squeeze the caliper shut, you will see some slack in the cable, and you can pop the cable head out. It'll take some strength, but once you pop the head out, the caliper will open completely, and you can slide the wheel and tire in without much problem, then squeeze the caliper together again, and you can pop the cable head back into the notch in the caliper.Other than that, the only other thing that gave me much trouble was deciding which way to mount the front forks, since there's no clear diagram, the fork is turned sideways during shipping, and there's enough slack to mount them with the brake to the front or back. Ultimately, I measured the cables and looked for pictures on a few other websites. The wheel axel and brake should be to the front of the forks, and the top part of the fork assembly makes a slight 'V', which should point back toward the frame. As for the forks themselves, they're not super-smooth, but they do take the edge off of hard bumps.Ultimately, I'll take it in to a local shop and have them make final adjustments, but the bike is surprisingly good for the price, and my son really loves it. I would rate it highly for a young rider, just learning to ride a mountain bike, and for the smaller usia who only wants to ride on trails once in a while without spending several hundred dollars on a name-brand bike. On the other hand, if you are looking to put a lot of miles on one while riding trails, or you're a larger usia, this bike is not for you. You'll need to pony up. If you want to save money, talk to a salesman at a local shop about finding a good used bike (as with everything, there are always folks who have to keplek the latest and greatest, and you can often keplek last year's model USED for a lot less, when they decide to upgrade), or search online for websites that specialize in buying high end bikes in large shipments and selling them at a discount. Do your research, learn about bike setup, and you can save yourself a lot of money, that way.

4Value for the money, but...
By Artemis
We got this for our 11 year old son for Christmas. Bad news first: I was home when it was delivered and heard the UPS guy slam the package on the concrete porch and up against the front door, standing it on the wrong side of the package. It was clearly marked which side was "up" on the package. The box came to us extremely beat up so I thought the bike would be banged up as well. It was too late to send it back for another before the big day so we kept it. Upon opening the package to put it together on Christmas day, it was a surprise to find the bike to be in good condition. However, after all the heartache of getting it put together, a part to set the handlebars was missing. Probably fell out of the big hole in the side of the box that was torn open before we received it. It took a couple of weeks to get the part from manufacturer. The guy helping me over the phone from the manufacturer was a bit flippant and arrogant when answering, so I wasn't impressed with him specifically, but at least I got the part. Very annoying though. The good news is that the bike is made quite well. It is made with sturdy materials, very solid and can handle a bit of a beating (obviously, since it survived shipping). It looks like a more expensive bike too. It is also a hard-to-find-size for a man's bike in this price range. I was happy with the purchase once we had all the parts. We still need to take it in to get a pro to tune it to perfection, but I was able to get it ride-able until then.
